Why use Photoshop.

Introduction.

In a world where the word “Photoshop” can evoke mixed reactions, it’s crucial to clarify some fundamental concepts about this powerful tool.

Too often, we hear arguments against using Photoshop in photography, often fueled by a poor understanding of what the software can actually offer.

Today, I’d like to dispel some of these myths and demonstrate how Photoshop can be a powerful ally in enhancing your images without compromising their authenticity.

At the conclusion of this article, you’ll find clear examples of photographs compared before and after the post-production phase.

These examples will allow you to fully appreciate the transformation and communicative potential that can be achieved through this process.

The importance of the original shot.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand that Photoshop is not a magician capable of turning a mediocre image into a masterpiece.

On the contrary, it’s a tool designed to enhance the qualities of a well-captured image.

In other words, if the original shot is of poor quality, even the best editing software in the world will struggle to make it outstanding.

The real secret lies in learning to capture well from the start, so that Photoshop can complement your photographic talent rather than replace it.

The art of improvement.

When it comes to using Photoshop, the keyword is “improvement,” not “transformation.”

This is a fundamental concept that is important to clarify from the outset.

With all its advanced tools, Photoshop offers an endless range of possibilities to refine details, adjust exposure, correct colors, and much more.

However, it’s essential to exercise moderation and avoid over-processing.

Even small corrections can make a big difference, but it’s important not to lose sight of the ultimate goal: maintaining the authenticity of the image and respecting the original intent of the photographer.

Defining your style with Photoshop.

One of Photoshop’s distinctive features is its ability to allow users to define their own unique style.

With a vast array of customizable tools and filters, every photographer can develop a distinctive aesthetic that stands out from the crowd.

However, it’s important to experiment carefully and find a balance between creativity and realism.

*Note: By filters, I don’t mean pre-set or classic presets.

Even though the options are limitless, good taste and artistic sensibility remain fundamental to achieving truly exceptional results.

The precision of selective adjustments.

Another feature that makes Photoshop unique is its ability to apply adjustments selectively, thanks, for example, to luminosity masks.

This allows you to focus changes only on the desired areas of the image, ensuring precise control and greater creative flexibility.

However, it’s important to exercise caution here as well and avoid falling into the trap of excessive manipulation.

Preserving the authenticity of images.

Finally, it’s important to emphasize the importance of maintaining the authenticity and integrity of images.

While Photoshop offers the ability to correct minor flaws and enhance details, it’s essential to avoid excessive retouching that could compromise the naturalness and sincerity of the image.

A classic example is smoothing a subject’s skin: absolutely to be avoided.

Remember: perfection is not always synonymous with beauty; often, it’s the imperfections that give character and authenticity to a photograph.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Photoshop is much more than just a simple retouching tool.

It’s a universe of creative possibilities that, if used wisely, can transform your images into works of art without compromising their authenticity.

Knowing and fully understanding the potential of Photoshop is the first step to elevating your photographic abilities and creating images that truly capture the essence of the subject.

Food for thought.

Now I would like to know your point of view, by asking you these questions:

What is your personal approach to Photoshop in photography?

How do you balance the creative use of the software with the desire to maintain the authenticity of your images?

Finally, feel free to ask me any questions if you feel the need to clarify this concept with me.

My retouching.

So far, I’ve expressed my point of view on the use of Photoshop.

However, now I would like to invite you to take a look at some practical examples and share your opinions.

In my work, I mainly focus on creating images that convey a strong emotional impact through the use of contrasts and pronounced shadows.

This distinctive style distinguishes me and guides my creative process.

From the shooting phase, I take into account situations where contrasts and shadows play a fundamental role, and during the image development in Photoshop, I try to emphasize these characteristics without compromising the authenticity of my work.

I hope these considerations can inspire you.

Warm regards,

Leonardo
